How it starts
A fly lands on exposed food waste and lays eggs. In summer heat those eggs hatch in as little as 24 hours. The can is dark, warm and full of food, so the larvae stay and multiply until trash day.
Why a rinse does not fix it
Eggs and larvae sit in the film on the bottom and in the lid channel. A hose knocks some loose and leaves the rest. The next warm day, it starts again.
How to take away the invitation
- Bag food waste and tie the bag. Meat and fish scraps can go in the freezer until trash day.
- Keep the lid closed all the way. A lid propped open by an overfull bag is an open door.
- Get the film off the bottom. That is the part that takes hot water and pressure, which is what our trailer does.
After a clean, the can is sanitized and deodorized, so there is nothing left for a fly to smell from across the yard. Keep bagging and the problem mostly stays gone.
