Winter feels like a break from trash can smell. It is more like a pause button.
What is happening in there
From December to March, anything that hits the bottom of the can freezes in layers. Bacteria slow down but they do not die. Then one warm week in April thaws four months of buildup at once, and the whole garage knows about it.
Clean it before it freezes
A wash in October or November means the can goes into winter with nothing on the bottom to freeze. Our 200°F wash works in any weather, so if you missed fall, a winter clean still resets the can before spring.
Three things that help all winter
- Bag everything, including the stuff that seems dry. Frozen juice is still juice in April.
- Keep the lid closed so snow does not melt into the can.
- Do not chip at frozen buildup with a shovel. It scratches the plastic and gives bacteria more places to live.
